| 概要 | This paper clarifies the boundary recognition of a feudal lord in the early modern feudal era through an examination of the "Sefribenzaidake Boundary Dispute". It was a dispute over the feudal territo...ry between the Fukuoka feudal clan and the Saga feudal clan. The Shogunate judged in favor of the Saga feudal clan. According to the precedent studies, the Shogunate forbade feudal lords to become plaintiffs in suits over boundary disputes in the early days of the Edo era. In other words, the Shogunate restricted land disputes to farmers' suits. Such "farmer suits" became a general form of boundary dispute among the feudal clans through the early modern times. It has been said that conflict among the farmers in adjacent villages caused the "Sefribenzaidake Boundary Dispute". However, I made clear through analyses of historical documents that it was not the farmers but the Fukuoka feudal clan which began the boundary dispute. Most boundary disputes among the feudal clans in the early period of the Edo era were over economic benefits. However, there were no economic issues in the "Sefribenzaidake Boundary Dispute". Thus, this dispute is different from those of the early period of the Edo era. This boundary dispute signifies how the feudal lord of the Fukuoka feudal clan recognized the clan's boundaries. For instance, feudal lords recognized that they were just in charge of lands of the Shognate to look after them in the early days of the Edo era. However, as feudal lords ruled longer, they came to have a stronger desire to possess those lands. Therefore, the Fukuoka feudal clan made use of farmers to appeal the boundary dispute to the Shognate. I conclude that the "Sefribenzaidake Boundary Dispute" essentially reflected the intention of the feudal lord of the Fukuoka feudal clan.続きを見る |
