Abstract | This paper contrasts the Japanese "~tekuru" and the Chinese "~qilai". The results are : 1. The most basic meanings of both "~tekuru" and "~qilai" are spatial. This spatial meaning was extended into th...e realms of time and psychology and now the expressions are semantically multivalent. By adding different profiles to the central image schema, "~tekuru" and "~qilai" have come to express multiple semantic aspects. 2. While the Chinese "~qilai" has an extended meaning in the social realm, we cannot find this extended usage in the Japanese "~tekuru". This is because in the former there are usages of the Chinese "lai" which is related to the speaker's subjective viewpoint and "qi" which is related to "up and down." 3. Referring to psychology, the Japanese "~tekuru" sometimes refers to the senses or feelings in psychological space, while "~qilai" indicates the change from a good condition to a bad condition (this is also related to "qi"). The former has been extended by ontological metaphors, while the meaning of the latter has been extended by orientational metaphors.show more |
