Abstract Yiti I sakiz tistaki boz (seven/eight-teeth cotton cloth)' is a term found in Old Uighur documents which were brought mainly from Turfan and Dunhuang 敦煽 dated to the West Uighur Kingdom period (9th -1...4th centuries). During the period cotton cloth functioned as currency in the region and yiti/sakiz tistaki boz is considered to have been the same. To clarify its actual state will contribute to a better understanding of the society and economy of the West Uighur Kingdom and its surrounding areas including Dunhuang. In this short paper, some Chinese terms in Dunhuang manuscripts (ex. ba-zong-bu八綜布), which are said to closely correspond to the Uighur term in question, are reexamined in the new light of other historical records in order to find what kind of cloth it really was. The published data on the archaeological cotton materials excavated from this region are also analyzed to make a survey of the quality of cotton cloth in general and to compare it with that of yiti/sakiz tistaki boz. As a result it is concluded that; (1) since the Chinese word zong 綜 has the same meaning as sheng 升, askein of warps composed of 80 threads, the adjective words of the cotton cloth in question explains how many warps were used to weave that cloth. (2) yiti/sakiz tistaki boz can be regarded as the cotton cloth of the most average quality, when considered with respect to thread count. (3) judging from the information on traditional handlooms in Central Asia, it is possible to form the hypothesis that the Uighur term 'tistaki' is derived from the name of a loom's part which operates on skeins of warps.show more
