Abstract A TV discussion program is an institutional talk, which includes emcees, participants, and viewers. Emcees, in particular, are responsible for the completion of each program within a limited time. Thi...s research analyzes how emcees in two political discussion programs control the floor, on the basis of IRF (Initiation, Response, Feedback) exchange structure (Coulthard & Brazil, 1992, 66), especially focusing on the flow of F (feedback) and I (initiation). Quantitative and qualitative approaches show that more than 70% of turn-providing act by emcees, occurred simultaneously with Feedback-move, and after long type of Feedback (formulation) are used to summarize, paraphrase, and evaluate, the emcees did one of the following A: call participant's name, B: introduce new topic, C: introduce opposite opinion, and D: Inquire other participants about the same topic. Moreover, it clarified that various FBs are sometimes selected according to the situation, and minimal response are used especially when the emcees fail to get their turn, in order to ensure success of their next turn.show more
