朱子学伝播、その根幹としての書堂教育 : 朝鮮後期の郷村社会における書堂の仕組みを中心に

概要 In the late Cho-Sun dynasty, Shodou(書堂),private educational institutes, served the role of enhancing blood relationships among village society, and of landing safely in the member of its society parti...cipating at the enlightenment order for the general farmers. Both the dynasty, whose national government ideology was the chu-tz u school, and village society accepted the Shodou as a medium and educated according to the school's instructions.
Because it was not so difficult to establish a Shodou's special rules and procedures, they showed varying aspects according to the founder's needs and requests. Originally the shodou functioned mainly as a lecturing place and sometimes it was used as the public hall of a village and as the place of the presiding village drinking ceremony.
Moreover, its influence was absolute, due to the role of religious service for ancestors. On the surface the purpose of the establishment of the Shodou was to teach morals but on a deeper level the discretion high or low in the village society, the propagation of human courtesy and the spread of the chu-tzu school, which was the ideology of leading governors.
Finally, the Shodou took new forms temporarily developed during the period of 19th Century modernization and under Japanese colonial rule, but the ruling government's policies resulted in the Shodou's termination, restricted by concerned regulation in 1918. Until the last moment of its existence, the social class structure remained unchanged at its core. Even through its name alone, the value of the chu-tzu school played a very important role in the society.
