概要 This paper is an examination of locus in the study of media. By taking up the case of murals in Northern Ireland, the relationship between media and their representation from a locus angle will be dis...cussed.
Murals in Northern Ireland are community-based media, while they have received attention with regard to the political strife between Unionists and Nationalists known as the "Troubles". In this regard, drawing murals is considered to be a political and cultural activity intended mainly to arouse nationalism. Murals are often addressed within the context of practical effects to highlight the problems in Northern Ireland and have been regarded as alternative media. Here we see the assumption that murals depict certain claims and reflect a social and political situation in the area.
But does only the content reflect the way of society and politics? They are drawn on concrete sites. In other words, murals don't exist as they are. To exist as themselves, murals need to have undergone varying choices: a choice of site and theme, an absence or presence of client, whether there is maintenance or not. What makes them? Where are they drawn? Who are their spectators? These points are made an issue regarding contents drawn on the media as well. In short, the locus of murals is put in question. By making an issue of the locus of murals, characteristics of the media and politics in a much broder sense emitted from the location will be exemplified.
