概要 Zhou Zuo-ren (1885-1967) is a litterateur - Shao Xing - born in China, who was deeply connected to Japan. He is known as "the department store of J apanism" and started to write "familiar essays" from... the mid-1920s. In fact, his "familiar essays" fuelled the popularity of the so-called "humorous familiar essays". It would, therefore require a study not only in terms of the writer himself, but also from the viewpoint of the "familiar essays".
Qian Li-qun, Noriya Ito, Yu Da-fu and other writers have attempted analysis of Zhou Zuo-ren's "familiar essays", with reference to terms which represent his orientation of pursuit, e.g. the artistry of his prose, character, "idle talk", and so on. In my previous article Zhou Zuo-ren and Japanese Culture, "2005.12 Lu Xun Research Monthly"(『魯迅研究月刊」北京魯迅博物館大象出版社,2005.12),I analyzed some his 1920s descriptions. These descriptions are rooted in his experiences of the food culture of Tokyo and Beijing, and I analyzed them from the perspective of his cultural idea formation. However, I feel that there is room for further analysis. Thus, reconsidering Zhou Zuo-ren's "familiar essays" more precisely, I have positioned this article as a supplementary discussion of the previous one. At the same time, I consider his cornerstone of thought as the "pursuit of daily life". This "pursuit of daily life" is a term that is used in some of his previous works. And it is often used not only in his works but also by others who study them, and would be considered as a key description of his style.
