Abstract This research used a test format to investigate how Chinese learners of Japanese language interpreted examples of conversation containing many incorrect interpretations of the function of speech style..., such as those pointed out by Chinami (2005). As a result of this investigation, the following became clear. 1. Chinese learners of Japanese recognize the conversation of their seniors and juniors, especially those close in age to themselves, as conversation "between friends," and exhibit a tendency to try to express familiarity by use of the plain form. 2. Chinese learners also exhibit a tendency to use the plain form to express familiarity towards a superior. Since they have not received instruction regarding suitable utterance strategy. They often use the plain form where it is inappropriate. 3. Chinese learners exhibit a tendency to immediately associate the existence of "respect or politeness" with speech style. 4. There are times when Chinese learners fail to notice changes in social context. 5. There was almost no observable proof to say that higher regonition of the function of speech style increases the progress of interaction with Japanese people.show more
