Abstract In the shitearu construction, there still remains the questions 1) to what extent we can interpret it as'passive voice', which possess properties of (i) marking in morphology, (ii) decreasing a valenc...e in syntax and (iii) focusing on the patient instead of the agent in semantics, and 2) what grammatical category it belongs to. The purpose of this paper is to provide a satisfactory answer to these problems The syntactic and semantic characteristics of the N P-ga shitearu construction overlap those of passive voice . On the other hand , although the N P-wo shitearu construction can occur with an overt agent without promotion, it decreases a valence in terms of 1) demoting of the agentsubject to the status of an optional term and 2) promoting the patient-object marked by the accusative case to the status of subject in grammatical relations, marked by the same -wo case, which can be regarded as a sign of ergativity. Both the N P-ga and N P-wo constructions, consequently'. are similar to passive voice and can be said to be an expression of‘objective resultaive' like voice . Moreover, the fact is noteworthy that objective resultative is expressed by passive voice in English and Russian, thus indicating a high correlation between objective resultative and passive voice.show more
