| Abstract | In this paper I attempt to provide some insights into the regional perception of the Asia-Pacific and examine how it has been formed with consideration of changes in the world economic structure. I wi...ll discuss how regionalism today has overcome the limitation of a geographic or historic perception so that interregional relations and dynamics also create a region. "The Asia-Pacific" region is one example of this . During the late 1980s East Asian regional dynamics and America's shift to stressing economics, made regional institutionalization in the form of APEC possible. However, America and the Asian member states' understanding of APEC are different. The United States' long term aim is for an intense regional community like NAFTA. Whereas the Asian states look toward a softer open regionalism, because they have promoted their common interest through global free trade and they fear the interference of a superpower in the region. The region is characterized by diversity. Thus I conclude that the key point for the development of APEC is to overcome the difference of understanding while respecting diversity.show more |
