Molluscan fossils of the Pleistocene Ryukyu Limestone of Kikaijima Island, southwestern Japan-I. Bivalvia

Abstract Ten new fossil localities of the Pleistocene Ryukyu Limestone, Kikaijima Island, Ohshima County, Kagoshima Prefecture, were added to NoMURA and ZrNBo's locality. Eightyseven bivalve species from the t...en localites of the Ryukyu. Limestone were identified and paleoenvironments of the fossil localities were examined using of HDM (horizontal distribution records of living species) and VDM (vertical distribution records of living species) diagrams. Among the 87 species, only 37 species are common to NOMURA and ZINBO (1934). This evidence suggests that the fossils of the localities, except for Loc. 3, were heaped up in shallower environment than depth for the fossils of NOMURA and ZINBo's locality, i. e. Kamikatetsu. Tucetona pectunculus (LINNAEUS, 1758), Comptopallium vexillum (REEVE, 1853) and Monitilora simplex (REEVE, 1850) are newly added to Japanese malacofauna. All the fossil localities, except for Loc. 3, were represented by a similar molluscan assemblage, consisting of mollusks live mainly in the upper subtidal zone, less than 20 m, and mainly live in tropical to warm-temperate waters. The Ryukyu Limestone accumulated in the warm shallow water. Geographic distribution of tropical and warm-temperate elements of mollusks in the Pleistocene age around Japan is offered by this study, which is useful for investigating of origin and migration of the tropical elements of the modern Japanese fauna.show more
