Abstract This article examines the relationship between the Japanese leather industry and Korean cattle during the Meiji period. To promote the Westernization of the military, Meiji Japan ordered munitions fro...m a small number of capitalists. Led by the Sakura, Fujita, and Okura corporations, these leather companies had grown through the supply of military resources through the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese War along with Japan’s expansion. However, the procurement of cowhide, which was used to manufacture military goods, was a big challenge for these companies during wartime. During the Russo-Japanese War, the value of Korean cattle as military resources increased significantly, the Japanese forces began to acquire and utilize them. Meanwhile, the post-war recession caused the merger and reorganization of the leather industry, resulting in the creation of the Nihon Leather Company in 1907. The members of the Okura and Sakura corporations served as the company’s executives, improving the efficiency of logistics delivery and overhauling the mass production system. Based on the experiences of the Russo-Japanese War, they focused on acquiring livestock resources in Korea. In conclusion, the growth process by Meiji Japan’s leather industry was closely connected to the development policy in colonial Korea, also strongly conscious of its military use.show more
