Abstract It is well known that Japanese language possesses a large set of sentence-final particles which typically occur in conversations. They are signals of the speaker's various sentiments. This paper discu...sses discourse function of the final particle "ne" based on the theory of the territory of information. The sentence-final particle"ne" is compared to "yo" in analyzing its usage. The first attempt of this paper is made to clarify how the territory of information determines the use of "ne". At the first part this paper, I tried to clarify what the territory of information is. I taped an interview program and used it as a document for analysis in this article. The results show that the choice of "ne" depends on whether the listener is taken to the speaker's territory. "Ne" is used when the speaker tries to share his/her territory with the listener. In conclusion I suggest "ne" be introduced initially and treated positively in the teaching of Japanese.show more
