Abstract This paper focuses on the most prototypical usage of the pseudo-question “Shi bu shi” sentencefinal construction and discusses its forms and functions from the viewpoint of politeness in Brown & Levin...son (1987)."Arousing recognition" is an instruction sentence which implies the intention of invitation and suggestion, while taking the form of question explicitly. According to B & L(1987), it can be "a way of suggestive clarity implicitly”. When the speaker uses the “Shi bu shi” as "Arousing recognition" to present the opinion, he expresses his reasons for positive and euphemism by using connection representation. Moreover, it is shown that the speaker emphasizes fellow consciousness or express general kindness by adding "name" and "relative name" to the familiar person, by using "social common name" to the person in the first meeting before and after “Shi Bu Shi”. It is applied to positive politeness in B & L (1987) and is considered to act as mitigation of the threat of the FTA. In addition, when the speaker solicits and proposes to social status higher than him by using “Shi Bu Shi”, he selects the “position name” to express his respect. Such an expression is considered to be the result of negative politeness in B & L(1987).show more
