This paper focuses a Chinese character 啞 in a sentence, citing a deaf member of the imperial family in Japan, Takeru-no-Miko, in a historical chronicle “Nihon Shoki” on the basis of comparison between history of words related to the deaf-mute in Japan and China in the ancient and middle ages. The consideration suggests that the sentence was the earliest example as the 啞 meaning the deaf-mute observed in historical documents in Japan, and that the 啞 would be used as a polysemic word implying not only the deaf-mute but also smiling.
