Abstract |
This study examines the impacts of the traits of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on relatedness- and individual based identities among university students. A total of 116 students completed scales on a...utism spectrum quotient(AQ), relatedness-based identity, and individual-based identity. The study results of an unpaired t-test and multiple regression analysis indicated that the high-AQ group had significantly lower scores than the low-AQ group for relatedness-based identity and individual-based identity. Low values for social skills and communication on the AQ in particular had a significantly negative impact on relatedness-based identity and social skills within individual-based identity; these results suggest that students with relatively strong ASD characteristics face challenges in establishing both relatedness- and individual-based identities. In particular, the difficulty in establishing relatedness-based identity may be affected by inability to connect with others and being easily misled by other’s words and unique speaking style.show more
