Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare independent and interdependent self-construals in teachers who coach athletic club activities and to clarify the relationship between cultural self-viewing and... depression. In addition, this study presents the results of a comparison between age groups. The participants were 157 middle school and high school teachers who coach athletic club activities (male: 128, female: 29). They completed the Scale for Independent and Interdependent Construals of the Self and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The reliability and validity of each scale were confirmed by Cronbach’s alpha and confirmatory factor analysis. The results of this research indicated that interdependent self-construals were significantly higher than independent self-construals among teachers who coached athletic activities. In addition, independent self-construals had a positive correlation with depression in the young-aged adult group, and interdependent self-construals had a negative correlation with depression in the middle-aged adult group. The present findings suggest that cultural background is associated with depression.show more
