Abstract Kyushu University restructured its teaching assistant (TA) system at the beginning of the 2019 Winter semester. The reforms not only meant a fundamental change to employment procedures, but also to th...e responsibilities and status of TAs throughout the university. One of the main goals of the newly implemented regulations was to encourage TAs to take on increased teaching responsibilities. This paper focuses on efforts made by Kyushu University’s Self-Access Learning Center (SALC) to respond to this initiative by introducing a series of regular TA-led study groups. These educational activities were designed to give TAs who worked in the center an opportunity to develop their teaching skills, share their research with students outside their field of expertise, and gain a level of hands-on experience that had not been available previously. TAs were given freedom to put together their own sessions and encouraged to create collaborative, student-centered events. The groups helped students learn more about TAs’ academic interests, facilitated discussion, created a new space within the center for language practice, and fostered a sense of community amongst participants.show more
