Abstract | The lamentation of a Christian against the City of London, published in 1542, is a Protestant propaganda pamphlet against Catholicism, written by Henry Brinkelow, a Protestant polemical satirist. The ...last decade of Henry VJII's reign saw a strong Catholic reaction against his earlier pro-Protestant reform policies, which unleashed an ideological tension and radical propaganda battles using sermons and pamphlets. Brinkelow's pamphlet was one of them and belonged to this period of ideological crisis in Tudor England. The present paper aims to analyze the discourse of religious conflict in his pamphlet, focusing on its Protestant rhetoric of apocalyptic eschatology, and clarify the political and ideological milieu in which the author pronounces his radical criticism against Catholicism and social evils of the city.show more |
