Abstract This paper aims at discussing the meaning and future development of model making in education of the product design. Models in the product design are classified into three groups, i.e. study models, p...resentation models, and prototypes. The basis in the design education depended largely on the Bauhaus. The school concentrated its force in the design study for articles aiming at mass-production after it moved to Dessau. Pipe chair designed by Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe were the greatest results of it. As a result of transfer of the pipe chair design rights from Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe to the Thonet Inc., they were mass-produced from the early 1930s. The Thonet Inc. promoted young designers aggressively early in the 20 centhry. Alvar Aalt started designing chairs around 1930. Although he began designing pipe chairs, he gradually turned to design mass-production chairs using plywood. With the advance of the adhesive performance in 1930s, Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames released plywood chair with three-dimensional curved surfaces. In 1950s Japanese auto makers started adoping clay models, and from the late 1980s they were fabricated by the numerical contorol system. Most of these model making techniques were introduced from U.S.A. Under the trend of laying stress on postgraduate courses, the model making practices have been gradually neglected in Japanese universities. To make a breakthrough in such trend, it is necessary to prepare manuals for model making and to strengthen the cotinuous training to students. It is also necessary to search the trend in the advanced technology and to intoroduce a new system as fur as possibie. Results obtained by so doing should be returned to the whole through education of the product design.show more
