Abstract The purpose of this paper was to clarify the various phases of palole (utterance) in Japanese. A number of utterances in Japanese were classified from the viewpoint of the relationship between the spe...aker and the listener. As the result, they were divided into the vertical and the horizontal utterances, represented by a chart. The vertical utterances came into existence in the non-mutual relations, and the listener had no choice but only to listen or speak in chorus. The characteristics of the horizontal utterances were the mutuality and the equality between the speaker and the listener. Then, the next topic was to clear the details of differences between "hanashi" (talk) and "katari" (narration) which were both the horizontal utterances. As a result, it was found that "katari" had a pattern on the plot, rhythm, and so on. In contrast to "katari", one of the most obvious characteristics of "hanashi" was to talk freely. Finally, it was considered how these utterances were listened on the scene of clinical psychology. In conclusion, it was important to be aware of the differences and the mutuality of the phases of palole in the psychotherapy.show more
