Abstract The purpose of this research was to show how nurses in general hospital wards perceive the pain of cancer patients, in order to discuss the issues of palliative care. As a source for our research data..., we used the nursing record of one cancer patient who had suffered from pain and insomnia. We also interviewed six nurses who had taken care of the same patient. We analyzed these data by the qualitative and inductive method. As a result, 20 categories emerged from the data analysis of the nursing record, while the contents of our interviews were categorized into five items. We herein discussed how the nurses tended to perceive a cancer patient from the viewpoint of physical consequences. In addition, the nurses acquired some information about total pain which included four types of pains (physical, psychological, spiritual, and social pain). However, they were unable to effectively utilize the acquired information because they failed to explore the aspect of total pain. We suggest that nurses need to share more information among more nurses.
