Abstract This piece of work is an opera libretto of Ramayana composed by Shigenobu Nakamura. At present, he’s been composing it aiming for a first performance at the end of 2011. The original work of this oper...a is Ramayana, an epic poem of Indian origin. Ramayana is a very popular story not only in India but also in Southeast Asia. It is also a motif in many folk performing arts. Its story is that the hero Prince Rama fights with the Devil Ravana to find Sita, his kidnapped wife, and finally he beats Ravana. Various episodes add color to this scenario. Especially, some episodes in which Hanuman, a white monkey, does a great job for Rama are interesting. The author compiled the original work of Ramayana into an opera libretto of three acts. The first act focuses on a scene where Princess Sita is kidnapped by a golden deer due to a plot by Ravana. The second act focuses on a scene where the kidnapped Sitar rejects an offer of marriage from Ravana and preserves her honor. The third act emphasizes a scene where Rama pulled Ravana to the sword and saved Sita. Rama’s “struggle”that he lost Sita is“solved”by beating Ravana by Rama himself. This opera libretto is made so that various actions of personages toward a solut10n can always fire up audience’s interest.show more
