Abstract This research focuses on the cantilever chair and its use in Japan during the post war period of 1945-1949. The objective is to understand the method in which the cantilever chair was used during this... time, as well as its form and features. The research method involved studying VHS and DVD movies produced between 1945-1949 for the use of cantilever chairs. The located scenes were then analyzed, looking at how the chair was used, the category of chair depicted, and its relevance to the given period. The survey encompassed 43 movies from the post-war period, with 10 cantilever chairs being located. Within this, 2 movies depicted cantilever chairs in settings dating from the earlier periods of 1938 and 1941, respectively. The remaining 8 movies depicted the cantilever chair in the post-war period, and in many cases this involved a cabaret setting. The material used in the cantilever chairs was of two types; metal and bamboo tubing. Those chairs made of steel tubing were largely Marcel Breuer(1902-1981) and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe(1886-1969) copies, or an eclectic mix of both. Chairs made from bamboo tubing were of the same type as that produced in the period before the war. Both types of chair were produced within Japan and this study can confirm from that, through the use of cantilever technology both before and after the war, the production of the cantilever chair was a success in Japan.show more
