Abstract This paper aims at systematizing the formation and development of Japan's bent wood processing technique, by comparing the sledge manufacturing technique using the bent wood processing method introduc...ed from Russia by the director of Hokkaido Colonization Office in the early Meigi era and the bent wood processing technique developed in the late Meigi era in Tokyo, Akita and Osaka. As a result of the discussion made on both the documentary material research and the field research, the following finding are noted. 1. The Russian technician invited by the director of Hokkaido Colonization Office instructed the Japanese in the manufacturing method of sledges and wheels after the Thonet method. 2. In the 30s of Meigi era, Yodobashi Bend Wood Factory in Tokyo was manufacturing bent wood building components and wheels after the Tonet method. 3. The bend wood furniture manufacturing technique was introduced during the later harf of Meigi era from Europe.The Forest Division of the Agriculture and Commerce Ministry and other private technicians contributed to this introduction. 4.The Thonet method is not developed by Thonet Inc., but its formation may dates back further.
