概要 The Puritan Revolution (1649) closed the theaters, virtually annihilating the glorious tradition of Elizabethan and Jacobean drama in which Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Jonson had staged their great dram...atic works. In the Restoration (1660), Charles II came back to England from France, and the French style of drama, accompanied by many new theatrical elements, such as proscenia, female actors, and French classical drama theories, was introduced into English theatres to fill the vacuum of the stage. In the previous age, drama had already been discussed in essays on poesy and metatheatrically in plays as well as in Puritanical pamphlets against theatres and defenses for them. After the Restoration, however, drama criticism was firmly established as an independent genre of criticism, much owing to the critical efforts of John Dryden, "the father of English criticism." This paper aims to analyze his Essay of Dramatic Poesy (1668), focusing on the conflict between English and classical views of drama in his age, in order to evaluate its contributions to the development of drama criticism.続きを見る
