Abstract | This article analyzes how micro-credit influences women's life in rural Bangladesh. Micro-credit is important capital for increasing family income. Microcredit is generally known as such not only that... it helps the borrowers economically, but also the women's status and conditions in their families. However, our research shows that women who take loans from Grameen Bank did not make remarkable economical changes. But some of borrowers did not care about very much the function of loaned money for generating income. They expect that loaned money change somehow their lives, such as improving their status and condition in their families. It is also important that borrowers get more opportunities to receive medical care and express their opinion for buying goods for them, such as clothes and ornaments. In addition, loaned money makes feel easy in their family because they contribute to getting fund into household. Sometimes borrowers keep loaned money for household emergency because their husbands' income is unstable. Therefore, this paper argues that since there are other functions than providing capital, micro-credit works for improving women's lives even when microcredit does not improve household economy.show more |
