Abstract This paper aims at lightening the development stage and initial design of steel tubular cantilever chairs in Japan. Steel tubular cantilever chairs in Ja pan were first developed by Nihon Kinzoku Kako... Co., Ltd. in 1928 after being motivated by the movement for new design Europe. Takehiko Mizutani who had studied at Bauhaus started studying tubular furniture including cantilever chairs by a request from Tanbaya Shoten in November 1930. As a supervisor at Yokohama Senkyo Co., Ltd. He made several trial chairs on an experimental basis, and released a prototype chair at the Tokyo Bijutu School exhibition in March 1931. While Keiji Kobo Studio started studying tubular cantilever chairs on a full-scale in 1931, and prepared their design drawings in September. Iwao Yamawaki who studied at Bauhaus from Octover 1930 to September 1932, released his paper on the actural condition of tubular furniture in Germany and other countries in Europe on the Kokusai Kenchiku journal in December 1931. Although his consideration was excellent, his opinion was not reflected in the development and initial products of tubular cantilever chairs in Japan. Steel tubular cantilever chairs in the initial stage lacked basic study in design, and tended to easily imitate preceding European products.show more
