Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate an aspect of the influence of "international typographic style" on the contemporaray Japanese graphic design movement by addressing on the design experiment...s of "SD" magazine from 1964 to 1985. The "SD" magazine was established in 1964 as a media which deals with architecture, art and design from broad point of view. Besides the editor Keiich Taira, famous designer Kohei Sugiura took part in the establishment of the magazine as a member of the editorial board. As a result many experiments for the design of the magazine were tried from the beginning. One of them was the total design method by which magazine was controlled as an object derived from Sugiura's experiences in "Ulm School of Design". At the later period, 197 4-1985 "design-editor" Shukuro Babara introduced the method derived from Swiss typography such as Karl Gerstner' s "mobile grid" and tried to apply them to Japanese typography. In this article, we describe the historical development of the design of "SD" in details and argue their contribution to Japanese typography by analizing their process, purpose and thought of design.show more
