Abstract This paper describes the compositional design for my musical work series on the Ramayana as the outcome of my research on Southeast Asian culture, particularly pertaining to the Indian epic Ramayana. ...The various approaches I have attempted in each work are described in the following four categories:
(a) Works based on the Ramayana story itself-Digital shadow play: Shadow of Rama (2004), Digital shadow play: Another History of Ramayana (2005), and Symphony No.4: Ramayana, Love and Death (2006). Although the Ramayana has already been considered within the framework of shadow play show, the author has recreated it in new styles-as a video art that is performed live and as a musical composition. The structural description of the symphony presents the manner in which the author has brought to life the various possibilities in the Ramayana in the form of an "art of time."
(b) Work inspired by the plastic arts that are related to the Ramayana-Symphony No.3: Gallery of Reliefs (2002). The exquisite charm of the reliefs on the wall of the gallery in Angkor Wat, especially those related to the Ramayana, motivated me to compose this work.
(c) Works inspired by the performing arts related to the Ramayana-Tone poem for strings: Ponhakay in the Shape of Seda (2006) and a preliminary digital shadow play, A Battle in Lanka (2007). The imposing vibrations in Sbaek Thom (Cambodian large-scale shadow play) and its incidental music led me to compose these works.
(d)Works inspired by the characters in the Ramayana Story -Tone poem for four percussions: Hanuman, Your Courage Deserves Praise (2006) and a piano suite for four hands, Portraits of Gods (2007). The audience speculation regarding the gods in the story of Ramayana will compel them to mourn the fall of existence, while remaining grounded in a reincamative world view.
