| 概要 | This paper aims at throwing light on the developing process and design of bamboo-made cantilever chairs developed in Japan during 1937 and 1938. The first bamboo-made cantilever chair was developed in... 1937. It was designed by Misukoshi's furniture design group with the assistance of Taro Suzuki, an assistant professor of wood craft at Tokyo Senior Craft Academy. This bamboo-made cantilever chair was a re-designed version of the wooden cantilever chair designed by Alvar Aalto, and was not original in idea. But its conception of applying bamboo's flexibility was unique, making some architects adopt it their interiors aggressively. Study of bamboo furniture started sometime in 1932 at Craft Training School (Kogei Shidosho), and a model of chair using cleaved bamboo in a bent-frame portion was made before 1937. Since many research workers at the Craft Training School were graduates of Tokyo Senior Craft Academy, it is assumed that they might have given an indirect influence in the development of bamboo-made cantilever chairs. Charlotte Perriand, a French, who came to Japan in 1940 under the invitation of the Commerce and Industry Ministry designed and exhihited a bamboo-made cantilever chair. This chair was a re-design version of the chaer designed by Mitsukoshi's furniture design group. This bamboo cantilever chair had been highly appreciated as a formative expression of Japan's traditional beauty, but such appraisal might have arisen from Charlotte Perriand's noted name, so it might not be tree. In the background of developing bamboo cantilever chaits lay a national policy of studying substitutes for metal. Although it May be a substitute, one could create a new and unique product depending on designer's ability. The bamboo-made cantilever chair was the typical case.続きを見る |
