Abstract In this paper, the author reviews his 2019 short-term study-abroad program held at Pembroke College, the University of Cambridge, focusing on a participant using a wheelchair, and proposes the prepara...tion and assistance suitable for a wheelchair user in such a program led by an accompanying staff member. The author begins with the selection of an appropriate type of wheelchair (self-propelled manual /manual attendant-controlled
electric) depending on various facts about the hosting institution. He then suggests what the leader should discuss with the host in the preparation process ranging from the medical conditions of the wheelchair-using participant to the actual assistance needed in the classrooms or the staying room and the consideration regarding the oncampus mobility. He goes on to show how the group should cope with the trips to and from the destination country with respect to airport-internal mobility, a wheelchair as checked baggage, etc. The final part of the paper is devoted to some mobility issues in the case of outings, mentioning various modes of transportation like railways, underground and buses. The main purpose of this paper is to show what the leader of a short-term study-abroad program is required to be prepared for when the group includes a wheelchair user, thereby contributing to a better preparation of similar new programs.
