Abstract Previous studies accounting for the superiority effect, as far as I know, can be divided into two groups; one that follows the Superiority Condition as proposed in Chomsky (1977) or it's refined versi...on in the recent minimalist syntax, and the other that follows the Empty Category Principle (ECP) approaches in Huang (1982), Rudin (1988), and so on. In this note, however, I argue that both of them have problems descriptively and explanatorily by considering multiple wh question constructions in multiple wh-fronting languages, like Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian. To resolve these problems, I propose an approach that is different from the two mentioned above. That is, superiority is given to the most economically derived representation among those in a competitive relationship. In this proposal, evaluation of economy is performed based on the concept of Cost, which is required for deriving the syntactic representation. Furthermore, I will define Cost as an unavoidable increase in Entropy when information that is temporarily memorized in the brain is erased. I suggest that the grammar has a device that suppresses the increase of Entropy, and adopt as a candidate of the device the Principle of Minimum Feature Retention proposed in Toyoshima (2005), or the Max Effect Condition proposed in Yamamoto (2010).show more
