Abstract It is said that there is a number of different lexical groups in the lexicon, such as native words, foreign words, and onomatopoeic words. All lexical items belong to one of these groups. It is well k...nown that the phonological behavior of the lexical groups is different from each other. Despite such differences, however, it has been pointed out that these lexical groups are subject to the same phonological constraints. In this paper, I first show that there are consonant distribution patterns that are particular to Turkish onomatopoeic words. Next, I propose two phonological constraints on the distinctive feature, [voice], to account for the consonant distribution patterns: (1) AGREE-[voi]/OBS; and (2) *D]_σ. In conclusion, I argue that the different lexical groups in Turkish are subject to the same phonological constraints by indicating that phonological behaviors observed in another lexical group are also subject to these constraints.show more
