Abstract From July 4 to October 14 in 2005, the vertical profiles of velocities and backscatters were measured with three 300 kHz broadband acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) housed in a Trawl-Resistant... Bottom Mount (TRBM) in the Tsushima Straits in order to determine the cause of the increase of missing data near the bottom in ADCP data from long-term ferry based monitoring in the Tsushima Straits after the ferryboat was replaced by a new ferryboat on July 2004. A pronounced diurnal cycle of missing data ratio and backscatter strength (BS) was found in the middle depth of the Western Channel from TRBM-ADCP measurements, consistent with large difference of missing data ratio between the daytime and nighttime cruise ADCP data from ferry monitoring. Diurnal variation of BS shows BS was concentrated near the bottom from 140 m to 170 m and low in the middle depth of the Western Channel in the daytime, became dispersed into upper layer around 4 am and 8 pm. The BS diurnal Cycle had relationship with the tidal cycle.show more
