Abstract The sensitivity of the subsurface counter current beneath the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) to the horizontal eddy viscosity is investigated by using a three-dimensional circulation model. The basin sca...le, clockwise eddy structure, whose nearshore part is the subsurface counter current, is well reproduced in the case based on the low viscosity coefficient. On the other hand, the model in the case based on the high viscosity coefficient reduce the eddy structure and forms a stretch of the counter current along the Japanese shelf edge, which corresponds to the numerical results produced by horizontal low-resolution models as shown by past studies. Since higher viscosity coefficients should suppress the baroclinic instability, the eddy structure can be induced by the baloclinic instability. The formation area of the counter current produced under the condition of the high viscosity propagates from the upstream side of the TWC, Oki Spur, to the downstream side, Tsugaru Straight at a speed comparable to the advection speed of the TWC.show more
