Abstract The structure of 'nominalizer +o' is a general term for conjunctive particles of mono o, tokoro o, no o. In modern Japanese, 'nominalizer+o' usually acts as an adversative conjunctive particle. This p...aper studies the characteristics in the grammaticalization of 'nominalizer +o'. Because of grammaticalization, this structure changes from a 'conditional case' to a conjunctive particle expressing comparative meanings of clauses and is thus grammaticalized into a conjunctive particle adhered to adverbial clauses. The mechanisms, which induce the grammaticalization, are reanalysis and analogy. During the analogy, the case particle o losses its properties as a particle and, influenced by the case particles of ga, ni, and de changing into adverbial particles, is analogized as an adverbial particle. No longer a case marker of the main clause during reanalysis, the case particle o is analyzed to compounded with the nominalized particle at the end of the clause. It is maintained in this paper that the grammaticalization of this structure is due to the case particle o’s change into an adverbial particle, which is a gradual process.show more
