Abstract “N1+Demonstrative+N2” is a common grammatical construction in Chinese, in which N1 and N2 represents two different nouns. If the two nouns have the same referent standing in the same syntactical relat...ion to the rest of a sentence, we have an apposition. Otherwise it is a subordinate. This study analyzes the functions of the demonstrative in the two forms and illustrates the corresponding constructions in Japanese. Our results indicate that these two forms of construction express one’s emotion toward an object. Though the demonstrative is used to refer such an object, its demonstrative function has been weakened. 「N1+to iu+N2」and「N1+no+N2」are the two constructions in Japanese corresponding to these two forms the closest. However these constructions contain no demonstrative, and the functions of 「to iu」「 no」 are different than those of the demonstrative in Chinese. Further the construction “N1+Demonstrative+N2” expressed a different meaning than「N1+to iu+N2」「N1+no+N2」.show more
