This paper discusses the hawking grounds of Yokoi clan, senior vassals in the Owari Domain, and investigates the post of "lord of the hawking grounds" and the relationship between the clan lineage and control of the grounds. Three points were clarified. First, in a region where a clan had no fief rights (chigyo-ken), depending on hawking grounds, the user would join in the control or controlled relationship with the domain's people and the lord of the grounds was appointed as an "act of public welfare" (osukui kōi). Second, the Yokoi clan, with its lineage right to serve as "the hawkiug clan," revived hawking grounds on what was previously fief territory and controlled with adaptation to the local environment (waju). Third, limitations on the lord of the hawking ground were indicated. The revival of hawking grounds meant protection of habitat for birds, while hawking caused serious damage to birds of villages within hawking grounds. These environmental changes came to threaten livelihoods of domain people living within villages of Yokoi clan's hawking grounds. This was an unexpected reversal of the original theory that grounds would serve for "public welfare" (osukui), and led to calls to revoke rights of hawking grounds.
