Koume Akasa (1902-92) was born and grew up in the once-prospered coal mining area of Chikuho; she learned singing as a geisha performer in a local geisha company, became a popular ballad and folksong singer in Tokyo, and contributed much in establishing and promoting folksongs and new balladry in the Showa period. Through the research of the gramophone records of folksongs and new balladry by Koume and about Hakata/Fukuoka in the Tamura Collection, this paper aims to examine the unique locality of the folksongs and new balladry, promoted by the business strategies of Japanese gramophone record companies as well as popularized through new media such as radio, cinema, and TV.show more |
