Abstract A lot of previous studies regarding educational inequality have paid much attention to the notion of cultural capital. Most empirical studies which try to test the Bourdieu's theory analyze the relati...on between the measurable indicators of cultural capital and educational outcomes. Although the results of individual studies are not consistent, they all focus only on the effects of socialization or transmission of cultural capital, in other words, the indirect effects of cultural capital. However, it may have the direct effects on educational attainment or expectation of the students. Furthermore, referring to the findings of Wisconsin Model, the direct effects of cultural capital may not be true and may reflect the effect of parents' expectation for their child. Using the data collected from high school students and their parents, therefore, above assumptions are investigated. The results show that these hypotheses are accepted. Despite the fact that direct effects of cultural capital on the students' expectation are certainly observed, they are regarded as the effects of parents' expectations for their child. Finally, the concept of cultural capital is discussed.show more
