Abstract The Inheritors, published in 1955, is the second novel by William Gololing. This novel, based on the historical facts of anthropology, depicts the two primitive peoples: the Neanderthals and Homosapie...ns. And its main story is about the process in which the latter people takes the place of the former one. The novel, however, is not an anthropological work, but a literary one loaded with his usual theme, that is, the matter of original sin. As is often true of his novels, there are many factors in it too that bring about various kinds of interpretations. Among them, it is the Neanderthals' belief in Oa that is the most important. It seems to give a good clue to understanding the nature of the novel. So that, this paper first is designed to make clear the nature of the religion, and then to show the mental difference between the two peoples from the viewpoint of the religion, which, I believe, is the best way to understand the author's intention in the novel.show more
