The average and coefficient of variation of the paddy-rice yield were calculated to the respective cities, towns, and villages of all prefectures in Kyushu, using the yield data from 1979 to 1990, to compare their rice productivity. The average yield ranged from less than 3.00Mg ha^<-1> to the level of 5.50~6.00Mg ha^<-1>, while the coefficient of variation was in a range between less than 5.0% and over 12.5%. Generally speaking, both the average yield and the coefficient of variation tended to be higher in the cities, towns, and villages of the prefectures in the northern Kyushu. The average yield was in a tendency to be higher in the cities, towns, and villages located on the coastal plain or the lowland at the 10wer stream of a river in the northern Kyushu, whereas it tended to be higher in the cities, towns, and villages of the inland area than of the plain in the coast or along the river in the southern Kyushu. Rice productivity of the cities, towns, and villages in Kyushu, evaluated by the average yield and coefficient of variation, was affected by their agroecological conditions including climatic characteristics, physiographic and hydrographic environment, and soil fertility.
