Abstract Polysemous words are considered to be difficult to learn because they are used frequently and have a wide range of meaning. There are two approaches in cognitive linguistics about how to understand th...e meaning of polysemy. One is a “prototype approach” whereby the meaning of the polysemous words is extended by metaphor and metonymy around the prototype word meaning, and thus constructs a radial network. The other one is a “core approach” of extracting common concepts that encompass all word meanings.
The aim of this paper is to review semantic description research and acquisition research on polysemy by these two approaches. These two approaches criticize the semantic description of the dictionary, which only arranges the word meanings, and try to reconstruct the word meaning structure of the polysymous words. The research of the prototype approach revealed that prototype word meaning is easy to learn, and acquisition of non-prototype word meaning does not progress which is because the learners are not aware of the association between word meanings. Therefore, in order to promote the acquisition of nonprototype meaning, a learning method has been proposed that learns while understanding the extending relationship of the meanings. In addition, regarding the core approach, it became clear that mastery of polysemous words is promoted by making the core image of words noticeable. The empirical research of these two approaches proved that the polysemous word learning method of cognitive linguistics is effective, but it is necessary to consider the “the retention of memory” and comparison of “the native language translation method” in the future.
