Hot-water extracts from 58 species of marine algae (5 green, 33 brown and 20 red algae) were evaluated for their ability to enhance the resistance of carp (Cyprinus carpio) against Edwardsiella tarda infection. The extract was injected intraperitoneally to carp at a dose of 50 mg/kg on days 1 and 4. On day 7 the fish were challenged with E.. tarda (3×10^8 CFU/100g) and the survivors were recorded daily for 7 days. Among the algae tested, the extracts from 6 brown and 8 red algae significantly prolonged the survival time of fish, but those from green algae were not effective. In addition, the extracts from 4 brown algae (MyeloPhycus simplex, Undaria pinnatifida, Laminaria japonica, Sargassum autumnale) and 4 red algae (Porphyra yezoensis, Gloiopeltis furcata, Carpopeltis affnis, Hypnea charoides), which were effective to carp, also increased the resistance of yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata) against Streptococcus sp. infection.
海藻(緑藻5種, 褐藻33種, 紅藻20種)の熱水抽出物をコイ(Cyprinus carpio)に投与し, 感染防御効果の有無を調べた. 熱水抽出物をコイの腹腔内に体重1 kg当り50mgの割合で2日おきに2回投与し, 最終投与から3日目にEdwardsiella tardaを腹腔内(3×10^8 CFU /100 g)に接種し, 菌攻撃から7日目の生残率と限定平均生存日数を求めた. 供試した海藻のうち, 6種の褐藻と8種の紅藻の抽出物を投与したコイの生残率は, 対照区が20%であったのに対して80～100%と高く, また, 平均生存日数も対照区に比べて有意に長くなった. 一方, 緑藻の熱水抽出物には効果が認められなかった. 次に, コイに対して効果のあった8種の海藻(イワヒゲ, ワカメ, マコンプ, アキヨレモク, スサビノリ, フクロフノリ, マツノリ, イバラノリ)の熱水抽出物をコイと同様にしてプリに投与し, 連鎖球菌(Streptococcus sp. 1×10^6 CFU /100g)で攻撃試験を行った結果, これらの抽出物はプリに対しでも効果があることがわかった.
