To elucidate fertilizer responsiveness of rice cultivars as Akeonohoshi and Nishihomare which were bred to obtain many grains in number per unit area, the comparison of characteristics of yield production between these and 9 cultivars including IR24 and Suweon 258, which had high fertilizer responsiveness, were carried out on three nitrogen levels (8,14,22kg/10a). The results were as follows; 1) Suweon 258 and IR24 increased the yield on the high nitrogen but Akenohoshi, Nishihomare, and others decreased yield. 2) The percentage of ripened grain of Suweon 258 and IR24 did not decrease so much in spite of the increment of spikelet number but that of Akenohoshi and Nishihomare decreased remarkably on the high nitrogen level 3) Though Akenohoshi is indica-japonica hybrid cultivar, it has no adaptability for heavy manuring.
