Abstract The purpose of this article is to describe the address terms of Japanese in the form of a flow-chart model used by Ervin-Tripp (1969). The main frame-work of the description is based on Suzuki's pione...ering work on the Japanese address system (Suzuki 1973). Because of the complexity of the system, the scope is limited to the adult grammar, formal style, neutral mood, and the address terms included are limited to last name (LN), first name (FN), title (T), kinship terms (K) and occupation (OCP) with the honorific suffixes "san" and "kun" where applicable. This is the first time that this kind of flow-chart presentation model has been applied to the Japanese ad-dress terms.show more
