Studies on the influence of form and level of nitrogen on the growth and the physiology of melon were carried out to get the basic knowledge of nitrogen nutrition of melon. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Ammonium toxicity always occurred when NH_4-N was supplied as a sole nitrogen source. 2. NH_4-N and the water soluble organic nitrogen such as glutamine were found remarkably in the tissue of melon supplied with high concentration of NH_4-N. 3. Absorption of bases such as K^+, Ca^<2+> and Mg^<2+> in the melon fed with NH_4-N was less than that in the melon fed with NO_3-N. The difference was about 0.10 e/100 g. 4. Pectic form of Ca decreased in the tissue of melon fed with NH_4-N. It caused remarkable determination of metabolic activity and abnormal morphological change in the tissue of melon. 5. Retardation of the growth of melon fed with NH_4-N is thought to be the result of the restricted supply of energy in assimilation of nitrogen and of the deficit of the carbon skeleton owing to the degradation in smooth metabolism of sugar.
