Hitherto not a single detailed observation on the egg-laying habits of Pegomyia hyoscyami Panzer has been performed in Japan. The present investigations have been carried out near and in the campus of the Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Northern Kyushu, during 1943--1947. The results are set out in nine chapters given above. The most important conclusion to be derived from the authors' invest igat ions is the fact that the fly does not oviposit on the leaves of the Japanese race of spinach and the cultivation of some European, Chinese or hybrids between those and the Japanese races initiates a marked increase in its population. Some bearing of the results On measures for controlling this fly will be evident to anyone who reads the contents.
