Abstract The base stones of Tofurō(都府楼 Office of Dazaifu) have been thought the works of the seventh century. But the excavations of last year taught that the base stones of Tofurō on the surface of earth were... not of the seventh century but of Heian (平安) period. Previously to these excavation it came under my notice that the base stones of Chūmon (中門 the Middle Entrance of Office) had the column-bases which were not exactly round. The works of Nara (奈良) period have the exactly round column-bases. If these base stones were roughly manufactured, it might suggest not only the spiritual decline of stone-masons but also the decline of general art of shaping. The base stones of Tofurō on the surface of earth might have been manufactured in the previous period to the date in which they were used. To clarify these questions we must compare those base stones with the base stones discovered now under the surface of earth. We expect to be able to solve the problems through further excavations, especially of East and West office buildings.show more
